This is a common question for small businesses, online sellers, and shop owners who are importing products for the first time.

First of all, the lowest shipping cost is always sea freight.

Sea freight is designed for large volume shipments, such as 20ft or 40ft containers, where the unit shipping cost becomes very low.

But what if your order is small?

For example, 200 or 500 pieces of small wooden trays or wooden gifts.

Should you choose sea shipping?

The answer is usually no, especially for beginners testing a new product.

Why?

• First, the volume is far too small for a full container shipment. Even LCL (less than container load) is often not ideal for beginners when the shipment size is very small.

• Second, sea freight requires import procedures such as customs clearance, documentation, and coordination with a freight forwarder.

If you are new to importing products from China, this process can be complicated.

Hiring an agent also means extra costs and extra communication, which may not make sense when you are only placing a small test order.

In this case, a better option is to let the supplier ship the goods by air DDP shipping.

Another more economical option is sea DDP shipping, where the goods travel by sea from China and are delivered by your local courier or carrier.

You can simply think of sea DDP as a slower version of door-to-door express shipping.

You don't need to pay anything separately, handle customs clearance, or deal with import paperwork.

The freight forwarder handles the import process and delivers the goods directly to your door.

While the shipping cost is higher than traditional sea freight, it saves you a lot of potential trouble and helps you receive the goods faster — which is especially helpful when you are testing a new product, launching a small business, or validating a market idea.
